Star of David

The Star of David, renowned in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David. It is of a hexagram figure, being of two equal triangles. One triangle stands for the ruling tribe of Judah, the other the former ruling tribe of Benjamin. It is as well visualized as a dalet and yud, the two alphabetic character* designated to Judah. There are a dozen Vav, or "men," symbolizing the dozen tribes or patriarchs of Israel. The hexagram has been used as a symbolic representation of Judaism since the seventeenth century, with precedents in the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries in Central Europe, where the Shield of David was partially utilized in alignment with the Seal of Solomon (the hexagram) on Jewish flags. Its use in all likelihood descends from medieval (eleventh to thirteenth century) Jewish protective talismans (segulot).
