Evil Eye

Evil Eye in Hebrew is ayin ha'ra.  ayin horoh, ayen hara or ayin hara are the different spellings in Yiddish.  There are certain safeguards in the jewish community due to their belief in the Evil Eye.  To avoid jealously of larger families in the community, instead of taking a census of names, the census taker took a sheckel, which is a small coin, from each person.  This way, the coins were counted instead of stating each person's name. Thus, avoiding harm from ayin ha'ra (Evil Eye). This custom had gone on for a long time.
